Spending on supply teachers by Birmingham schools rocketed to more than £20 million last year.

The huge sum represents a massive rise – and has been branded ‘unsustainable’ by campaigners.

Some of the biggest spenders are schools which have had teaching standards criticised by Ofsted, and others deal with the most challenging pupils in the city.
