A cash-strapped ambulance service spent almost £100,000 on making front-line staff redundant before offering employees a £500 payment for recommending candidates to fill front-line roles.
The payments were approved by the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) for six ambulance technicians to encourage them to leave early before the new interim chief executive, Andrew Morgan, was appointed in December.
Under the new leadership, paramedics have been offered £500 as “thank-you” payments since April to recommend candidates to fill technician and paramedic vacancies while new staff are also being welcomed with £2,000 “golden hellos”.
