Cash-strapped households were left shivering as more than £8million of taxpayers’ money was spent on Whitehall energy bills , it has emerged.

Figures seen by the Daily Mirror reveal the cost of keeping pen pushers and politicians warm in their cosy offices has soared.

The bill for heating and lighting the Department for Work and Pensions, slated for the introduction of the Universal Credit, has rocketed nearly 27% to just over £600,000 a year since 2010/11.
