Alex Salmond has been accused of “bending over backwards” to woo Scotland’s biggest lottery winners after private letters revealed he invited them to Bute House hours after an investigation into a previous visit ended.

The Telegraph can disclose that the First Minister risked controversy by personally asking Colin and Chris Weir to return to his official residence the day after being cleared over their last meeting.

Mr Salmond told the major SNP donors that now “the dust has settled” they should return to Bute House at a “mutually convenient time”, signing off the letter: “Yours for Scotland, Alex.”
