Bailiffs were instructed 26,344 times by Coventry City Council last year to collect council tax arrears of £14.2million.

The figure is a 54 per cent increase in just two years when the council reported 17,128 referrals.

That ranks the city 21st out of 326 authorities across England and Wales for the highest number of bailiff referrals.
