Only 53 per cent of hospital doctors underwent their obligatory appraisal last year. The figure for hospital doctors on contract was 24 per cent and only 73 per cent of consultants were tested.
Annual appraisals, dubbed medical MOTs, were introduced in the wake of the GP Harold Shipman’s 250 murders and the deaths of the Bristol heart babies, to ensure doctors were delivering high-quality, up-to-date care.
Freedom of Information requests by the Sunday Express reveal some of the top hospitals have the worst records. They include world-famous Great Ormond Street Hospital in London where almost half the consultants were not appraised last year.
