The Ministry of Defence has rung up a staggering £62,000 bill for using the speaking clock despite imposing a ‘ban’ on the service.

Staff at the cash-strapped department have made 157,000 calls to check the time during the past five years– equal to around 86 a day.

Calls to the service, accessed by dialling 123, cost 31p a time.
