FOI reveals NHS spends over £13m on weight loss surgery for Londoners

Thousands of morbidly obese people in London are missing out on vital weight loss surgery despite the NHS spending £13 million every year, experts warn.

The number of bariatric operations carried out by the health service in the capital has plummeted in recent years, with a quarter less weight loss procedures last year than in 2012.

The ops – performed on people whose weight has reached a dangerous level – include gastric bypasses and surgery to remove part of the stomach.
