Calls were made for a ban on councils selling electoral roll information after it was revealed North East local authorities have made almost £80,000 from the practice.

Town halls are obliged by law to make some data available to bodies such as credit agencies.

However, a Sunday Sun probe has revealed councils have been making ‘sizeable chunks’ of cash.
