TEACHERS in Wales clocked up more than 50,000 sick days last year because of stress-related illness, according to figures released today.

Research carried out by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) Cymru found that 12 of Wales’ 22 local authorities reported a rise in stress-induced teacher leave in 2013.

Data obtained using the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act shows that classroom staff in Neath Port Talbot were particularly under the cosh, with 5,088 days lost, and Cardiff, which lost 6,741 days, suffered the most. Both areas saw big rises in teachers missing school through registered mental health issues.
