New research has claimed 117,000 cars are stolen each year in the UK, but more than half of these cars are never recovered and around 30,000 aren’t even investigated by police forces.
Why? Because of police budget cuts and overstretched resources, according to Accident Exchange and its motor fraud investigation team, APU, which released details of its study on Monday.
Of the 44 UK forces, 43 provided data concerning car thefts, revealing a staggering 450m worth of stolen cars are never recovered and £229m are not even probed by the police.
