The Chief Constable is faced with having to wield the axe on his officers’ duties due to a strain on his budget.

George Hamilton has warned that the force will have to become a “blue-light” service; in effect only being able to respond to crime, rather than the providing proactive, preventative policing he would like.

Mr Hamilton said he also feared the service was facing a potential rise of over a third in sickness among his officers.
