Thousands of police officers called in sick for stress, anxiety and depression last year and bosses are blaming harsh cuts to their budget.

Figures show the number has increased over three years as police groups warn officers could end up “burning out” because of huge workloads.

Morale has also been affected by the Plebgate row, the new inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster and claims about the behaviour of undercover officers
