FOI reveals town halls blow £1.3million checking Twitter

Town hall chiefs have spent tens of thousands of pounds monitoring Google and Twitter for mentions of themselves – while making budget cuts to essential services.

Local authorities across Britain have spent a staggering £1.3 million tracking themselves in the press and on social media over the past five years.

The figures, released under the Freedom of Information Act, reveal that Birmingham City Council alone spent £108,915.
