London A&Es are treating hundreds of fat children, FOI reveals

The Evening Standard report:

Soaring numbers of obese children are ending up in London casualty departments, according to figures.

Hospitals are treating young patients suffering from weight-related problems including breathing difficulties. The number of obese youngsters admitted to England’s largest trust, Barts Health, has nearly doubled. The figures, out today, show that last year it dealt with 190 under-18s compared with 101 five years ago.

The trust includes Newham hospital, The Royal London in Whitechapel, Whipps Cross hospital in Leytonstone, and Barts in the City. The number of children with a weight problem admitted to Newham has quadrupled since 2008, from five to 20.
