Leading figures at the Department for Education spent £8,000 on luxury items a Freedom of Information request has revealed.

Michael Gove’s inner circle spent more than £8,000 of taxpayers’ money on lavish meals, flowers, booze and luxury hotel rooms.

The Education Secretary’s advisers and civil servants splashed out across the globe, from the US to China, on two Government cards.

The revelation will be an embarrassment to Tory Mr Gove, who is a cheerleader for Chancellor George Osborne’s message on austerity and the need to slash public spending.
