Home Office figures show 161 firms – including children’s’ soft play centres, beauty salons and high street shops – have been snared north of the Border since the beginning of last year.

The majority of illegal migrants were employed by restaurants and fast food outlets, with others working as cleaners, hotel staff and shop assistants.

Politicians yesterday said the startling statistics – accessed under Freedom of Information legislation – highlight how “widespread” illegal immigration has become in the UK.
