Hospitals are hiring agency nurses at a cost of up to £155 an hour to plug staff shortages.

The bill for temporary workers – after thousands of jobs were axed by the Tory-led coalition – has rocketed by more than 22% in just one year.

Agency costs across 100 NHS organisations have risen from £143million in 2011/12 to £175million in 2012/13.
