The Evening Standard report:

Nearly £700,000 worth of lead from the roofs of London schools have been stolen in the past two years.

More than 200 sites, including  primary and special schools, were targeted by criminals.

The scale of the problem was revealed as the Scrap Metal Dealers Act came into force. It requires licensing of  traders and gives police greater powers to investigate “no questions asked” cash deals.
