The shock figures revealed 234 lags were paid a total of £2.7m after being assaulted by guards or fellow inmates over the last six years.

That is an average of £11,000 each and recipients include serial killer Levi Bellfield who was awarded £4,500 in 2014 after being attacked by a fellow prisoner.

Yesterday it was also alleged that many of these claims are bogus, with prisoners getting fellow inmates to attack them and then splitting the compensation.
