Millions of holidaymakers travelling to Europe this year risk facing being forced to pay out for expensive private medical care if they’re holding an expired EHIC card.

Exclusive data, obtained by This is Money, reveals that just over seven million EHIC cards are set to expire in 2016.

This number is significantly higher than those expiring in previous, or future years, and could leave holidaymakers without access to cheaper healthcare in some European countries.
