Reading’s cash-scrapped council has spent more than £8.5 million on agency staff over the last year.

The local authority recently approved sweeping multi-million cuts and plans to axe up to 200 members of staff, but it insists it needs to pay for “experienced and committed interim staff”.

Due to a shortage of social care workers the council has become increasingly reliant on agency staff.
