‘Welsh NHS’s £153m agency bill is too high’, FOI reveals

The NHS in Wales has been criticised for its reliance on locum and agency staff which cost more than £150m over the last three years.

Figures obtained by the Welsh Conservatives through a Freedom of Information request, show how the NHS in Wales spent £153.7m on locum doctors and agency nurses between 2010 and 2013.

The figures were provided for most of the health boards for each financial year and had increased by around £50m from the £100m spent collectively by the seven health boards in 2008 to 2011.
