Hampshire County Council is aiming to claw back £40,000 of unpaid library fines a Freedom of Information request has revealed. 

The fines are outstanding from the last four years, the request showed.

Between October 2008 and September this year, the amount owed on items issued at Aldershot, Farnborough, Yateley and Fleet libraries totalled £43,982, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.

Figures released to the News & Mail showed that Aldershot library customers owed the most money during the period, racking up £16,450 in fines, followed by Farnborough with £16,390.

Yateley borrowers owed £8,166 and at Fleet library the amount was £2,976.
