After their two-night stay, the president and his delegation left UK taxpayers to pick up a £53,000 bill.

The 12-strong party had top-of-the-range rooms costing more than £2,000 per person per night.

The figure is in stark contrast to ­conditions in Afghanistan, which according to World Bank statistics is one of the most impoverished nations in the world.
