The Sunday Express can reveal that officials from the economic development department have used taxpayers’ cash to fund lavish trips to the likes of China, Canada and Qatar.

New figures show that the local authority has sanctioned costly long-haul flights, five-star hotels and top-of-the-range restaurants for their jet-setting staff.

It comes just five weeks after Edinburgh refused to provide statistics for our special investigation which found cash-strapped councils spend more than £1million-a-year on trips.
