FOI reveals Met’s gang squad sees gun crime halved

The Met today hailed a major breakthrough on gun crime as figures revealed the number of shootings in the capital has halved in two years.

Offences where a firearm was fired fell by 47 per cent from 560 to 294 between 2011 and last year.

Detectives say gang members are using re-activated antique guns or weapons from the two world wars because of the difficulty in obtaining high-powered modern pistols. A breakdown shows Lambeth has the highest number of shootings, with 113 incidents, accounting for more than a third of the capital’s shootings.
