FOI reveals NHS chiefs’ expenses: top executives paid five times the basic rate for train tickets

Nurse leaders have pleaded with NHS bosses to “show prudence” after revelations that health officials were routinely paying five times the basic rate for train fares.

Expenses claims from the board of NHS England disclose 170 train journeys costing more than £200 each during 2013/14.

They include 70 journeys between Leeds and London for which officials claimed more than £240 each – even though tickets for the return journey can be bought for as little as £45.20.
