Almost £2 million of taxpayers money has been spent in just three months by Northampton General Hospital chiefs on hiring agency nursing staff to care for patients.

Figures obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) show that the hospital spent £1,561,445 on staff between July and September in 2014.

This was more than double the £684,658 which was spent during the same three-month period in 2013 and higher than the £1,298,644 shelled out in 2012.
