Police forces have seen a surge in the number of officers facing disciplinary action over inappropriate or offensive comments posted online.

More than 500 policemen and women have been reported over their messages on Facebook and other social media in the last five years – with 90 disciplinary hearings held last year.

It follows a series of high profile cases in which officers have been caught commenting on police work or posting offensive material.
