Reports released by the Civil Aviation Authority show that tragedy has been avoided on 35 occasions since 2010 thanks to skilled pilots and air traffic controllers.

The terrifying log of incidents includes planes filling with smoke, sparks flying, burn marks, holes in the fuselage and the disabling of communications systems.

Although modern aircraft are engineered to cope with lightning strikes, there have been a number of catastrophic crashes over the years.
