The details are cloaked in secrecy, but police informants were paid more than a quarter of a million pounds by Avon and Somerset Constabulary in four years.

The force forked out around £275,000 to informants in a bid to solve crimes and hunt wanted faces.

The force is keeping tight lipped about how many informants they paid and how much each was given.
