It means taxpayers are forking out close to £1million per day.

One sergeant working for the Metropolitan Police put in so many extra hours, his total annual pay was pushed within a whisker of £100,000.

The officer was paid £52,784 in overtime to be added to his salary which, for most Met sergeants, is around £40,000.
