Almost £20million was paid out last year to cover 5,000 compensation claims at a rate of £53,000 a day.

The staggering sum includes £8million paid to prisoners for injuries, lost and damaged property, unfair detention and “other” reasons – including human rights cases and medical negligence.

Staff claims totalled just under £11million including £8.5million for injuries suffered in the line of duty.
