FOI reveals third of authorities adopt living wage

Unison’s audacious bid for a universal living wage across local government in 2014 has been boosted by research revealing the majority of authorities have either adopted the policy or are considering doing so.

The union’s campaign gained further momentum this week when the government’s poverty tsar Labour MP Frank Field launched a campaign for adoption nationwide.

A survey of all 375 authorities in England and Wales carried out by Unison found that 27.5% – a total of 103 – councils have adopted the living wage. Another 38.4% told the union in response to Freedom of Information requests they were considering the move.
