Ministers were urged to tackle the “unfairness and hypocrisy” of vice-chancellors’ pay today as it emerged that Britain’s lowest-ranked university awarded senior leaders a £600,000 settlement.

Vince Cable, the Business Secretary, was told to take urgent action to tackle executive salaries handed out by universities amid growing anger over a string of inflation-busting rises.

The Government should publish an annual list of pay and benefits awarded to each vice-chancellor and order universities to release minutes of “secretive” meetings staged to calculate salary levels, according to the University and College Union.
