A top civil servant has used his chauffeur-driven car for trips as short as 500 yards, it’s been revealed.

Sir Peter Housden, who stepped down last month from his £180,000-a-year post as Permanent Secretary to the Scottish government, took dozens of journeys under a mile.

He also took 35 round trips to Edinburgh Airport at the taxpayers’ expense – snubbing the city’s new and over-budget tram system.
