FOI reveals universities twice as likely to use zero-hour contracts

SQ Magazine report:

Freedom of Information requests have revealed that universities and colleges are more than twice as likely to employ people on zero-hours contracts as other organisations, with more than half of responding institutions admitting to their use.

Of the 145 universities and 275 further education colleges that answered the Freedom of Information request, made by the Universities and College Union (UCU) over 50% said they used zero-hours contracts, which have come under fire this summer over claims that they don’t grant workers stable income.

In the wider working world, 27% of companies are found to use the controversial terms of employment.
