Government criticised after it fails to ensure badger cull will be humane, FOI reveals

The Telegraph report:

A pilot cull is expected to take place in Gloucestershire and Somerset later this month, but it has been revealed that as few as 120 out of the 5,000 shootings will be independently observed.

The figures were released by Defra under the Freedom of Information Act to Care for the Wild, an animal welfare group, who has accused them of not properly assessing the suffering of badgers.

It revealed that a minimum of 60 shootings for both rifles and shotguns would be observed, lower than the expected 50 per cent for pilot culls.
