Salford council’s controversial Labour spin doctor has been appointed its permanent head of communications.

Matthew Finnegan – a one-time member of Tony Blair’s press team – is taking on a £65,000-a-year taxpayer-funded role heading up the town hall’s publicity operation.

Furious Conservative opponents have called the appointment ‘jobs for the boys’.
