The Liverpool Daily Post report:

Wirral council has handed over £45,000 to fraudsters – believing it was  paying the cash to a care home.

The authority today admitted procedures which should have picked up the  scam were not followed and a senior council officer described the failure as “unacceptable”.

Wirral council said it has  requested an investigation by Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud reporting centre, after it was discovered the money was missing.
